The Surveyor Minimum Qualifications Test certification is required for surveyors of long-term care facilities eligible to receive reimbursements from Medicare or Medicaid. Surveyors inspect facilities to ensure they’re following all applicable laws and treating its residents with the proper care. The Social Security Act sets the federal government’s minimum standards for certification. Each state may add its own requirements, so long as they meet or exceed the federal minimums.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services designs the exam for SMQT certification. It is conducted via computer at PSI testing center. PSI services operates at least one center in each state. You must contact the testing center at least one business day in advance to schedule your examination time. You may use your copy of the State Operations Manual as reference during the exam.
